The end of the 2014/15 has seen clubs like Liverpool and Barcelona part company with their long serving and inspirational players in Steven Gerald and Xavi Hernandez respectively. These players have achieved tremendous success at their clubs but notably they are in the evening of their careers opted to leave the clubs because of their advanced age among other factors coupled with very high demands of their greatly ambitious clubs could not deliver to the expectations.

Back home in Uganda, sensational midfielder Sulaiman ‘Mike’ Mutyaba and two time league champions Vipers SC reached a mutual agreement to release the former at the end of the 2014/15 season. Mutyaba joined Vipers SC in 2008 as a teenager from St. Mary’s Kitende. He helped the team win its maiden league title in 2009/10. He caught the eye of the Sudanese outfit El Merriek following his impressive display at the 2011 CECAFA Club Championships in Tanzania and he signed for them. His career was hampered by an injury hence returning home to recuperate. After recovery and returning to full fitness, he signed for TP Mazembe of DR Congo at the end of 2012.

Mutyaba returned home to Vipers at the start of the 2013/14 season in time for the league kick off and guided the club to the fourth position. His maturity and consistence came to life in the 2014/15 season helping the club win its second league title where he scored a whopping 9 goals coming from the midfield, two goals behind the club top goal scorer Miya Farouq with 11 goals.

Club chairman Tadeus Kitandwe confirmed that the club had earlier communicated to the player. “We are pleased to have a player of Mutyaba’s calibre in our ranks. Both club and player have mutually agreed to respect our contractual obligations to allow him take on a fresh challenge. We cannot underrate his contribution towards the two titles we have won and for that and more we will always be grateful. We wish him a great future. He will always be a part of Vipers’’ said Kitandwe.

The attack-minded midfielder who plays comfortably on both the right and left frank as well as in the centre played his last game with Vipers SC when he started the last home game of the 2014/15 league campaign against BUL FC at Buikwe, he was replaced in the second half with Julius Malingumu and therefore played an important part in helping the Club to their second trophy. The game ended 1-0 to the hosts and his immense contribution ensured that the league title came home beating rivals SC Villa to the prestigious crown.

Departing Mutyaba was all praises for the club he has diligently served for over 8 years during his illustrious career, “big thanks to the club management, coaches and players, I will forever be indented to this great family (Vipers) that has groomed me all these years. It has been my greatest adventure from a poor and helpless lad into an accomplished individual. There are no words to use to express my appreciation for loving and molding me into what I am today. I wish the club and all of you individually the best in the future’’ said an emotional Mutyaba on his personal social media platform.

He used the same platform to reveal his next move “Am happy to announce that I will be playing for Express Football Club next season”. Mutyaba recounted.
