Following an impressive 2014/15 season, 21 year Old Express FC defender Shafiq Bakaki has signed for defending champions Vipers SC ending the speculation that he was headed to the tax collectors URA FC.
Media reports had indicated that URA FC had a keen interest in securing the services of Bakaki to strengthen their squad following a trophies season in the just concluded 2014/15 campaign. It was futher reported that negotiations had started and a deal was to be clinched by the end of June 2015. Moses Basena has since been recruited to replace Alex Isabirye who left the club at the end of the season on mutual Consent. Basena who doubles as the assistant National Team Coach has been an admirer of Bakaki and he was quick to recommend the player for recruitment if URA FC was to challenge for honors the next season.
Bakaki made his mark by putting on a good performance while playing for Express FC which attracted the attention of National Team Coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic to earn him a place on the Cranes and the Kobs U23 National Teams respectively. The defender has since been on the radar of top local clubs including; URA, Vipers, SC Villa and KCCA FC.
“He is calm and collected which gives him great composure when he is with the ball yet very aggressive and strong. He has impeccable game reading and great leadership of the backline, we have acquired a quality player that will reinforce our defence”, said Golola Edward the Vipers Head Coach
Bakaki snubbed a move to URA to commit to Vipers when he agreed terms and signed a three year contract that will keep him at the club until 2018. “It a dream come true, I have always wanted to play for Vipers, they have great ambitions and the coaches believe in young players. I will work hard to secure a place on the first team” Bakaki promised.
Vipers have also signed John Semazzi (Express FC), Nkuubi Brian (Kira Young FC) and Seninde Duncan Ezekel (KJT Rwenshama).
